Lake Tohopekaliga – Best Bass Fishing in Kissimmee
About Lake Tohopekaliga Florida
Welcome to West Lake Tohopekaliga, known to the locals as Lake Toho, is a 22,700-acre lake in the City of Kissimmee. Lake Toho comes from the Seminole Indians who lived nearby, meaning “we will gather together here.” Lake Tohopekaliga is one of the most famous trophy bass fishing lakes in the entire country and spectacular, redear sunfish, birdwatching, and wildlife sightseeing.
Discovering Lake Toho
Introduce Lake Tohopekaliga Park at the lake’s north shore. It offers walking trails, barbeques or grills, pavilions, restrooms, covered picnic areas, a splash pad and playground for children, a fishing pier, a miniature lighthouse, picnic pavilions, and extremely lovely vessel ramps and docks and Big Toho Marona, all well maintained by the City of Kissimmee with low fishing pressure for its size.
Named and recognized as “The lakefront park,” it has a scenic walking trail. While sitting on park benches, guests can observe wildlife such as alligators, waterfowl, otters, sunfish, and turtles. The Lake Toho bass population of Florida-strain largemouth bass is the draw for most visitors as the most consistent lake in Orlando Osceola County.
Lake Toho is Legendary
In 2004, Elite Pro Dean Rojas set the Bassmaster record for the heaviest five-bass limit ever caught, right on West Lake Toho. Trophy fishing limit, totaling 45 pounds and two ounces of Florida fish, the Lake Tohopekaliga five fish set a new high that remains unmatched today in professional bass fishing competitions.
Local angler set the unofficial Osceola County Lake Toho bass fishing record for the biggest Toho bass. His big bass tipped the scales just over 16 pounds. The leading woman angler weighed 14 pounds and five ounces of bass on Lake Toho. Maybe the most impressive is BassOnline.com fishing guide Capt John Leech, who holds the record for the most 10lb largemouth trophy bass caught on Lake Toho and has been featured 11 times in BassMaster Magazine for his outstanding catches.

Lake Toho’s Diverse Ecosystem
Lake Toho is like most Florida lakes, consisting of shallow grass flats, natural bullrush, maidencane, and hydrilla that help to entrench the most significant part of the lake. The local population of wildlife, baitfish, and Lake Toho bass depends on it. In addition to local vegetation, the bottom of Toho improved by allowing extreme drawdowns to the lake’s water level. The St Cloud Canal comes from East Lake Toho and is the main water source feed.
Florida Wildlife Commission biologists have placed fish attractors in a general area for wildlife and fish. To view a map of Big Toho Marina with coordinates, click the FWC website.
Largemouth Bass Fishing Tips
Anglers targeting gigantic bass fishing for largemouth bass may want to direct their time on the water around the mouth of Shingle Creek, enhanced shorelines east and west of South Port Park, Lanier Point, Goblets Cove, and Browns Point. Offshore hydrilla patches near channel marker 24, Big Grassy Island, and Goblets Cove will also hold many bass on artificial lures or shiners.
Additionally, anglers who find moving water associated with rainfall-runoff should give these areas a cast or two. Both live and artificial baits in the abovementioned areas were utilized very effectively. Golden shiners are the live bait of choice by most anglers, although spinner-baits (white, white/Chartreuse or yellow skirted), lip-less crank-baits (chrome or shad colored), and plastic worms (black, black grape, black/blue, and June bug colored) will account for a fair share of the catches.

Best Times to Fish Lake Toho
You should always factor in weather conditions; the time of day and weather can affect your fishing success. Most of the bass population likes to spawn in February and March. After being shallow during the spawning period, they move away from shallow areas and into the hydrilla and Kissimmee grass throughout the lake. Excellent summer fishing spots include Big Grassy, Lanier Point, and Browns Point. The lake’s northern shoreline has tall grasses, often concealing large bass populations ready to bite topwater baits.
Panfish Fishing Tips
If crappie fishing is your thing, get your fishing boat and hit Canoe Creek in Lake Cypree or Southport Canal. Primetime on Lake Toho is February for crappie; Missouri minnows are best, but long-lining white, green, and yellow jigs around Marker 29. The jigs and minnows can be purchased at any website or fish camps around the lake.
Typically, you will find spawning activity by bluegill, sunfish, and pickerel from May to June in full force in Lake Toho. Anglers targeting sunfish or bluegill should try to schedule time on the water around the new and complete moon phases and concentrate their efforts on fishing areas having sandy bottoms associated with vegetation. Brown’s Point and North Steer Beach are two lake areas that have been produced over the years.
Live bait (crickets and red wigglers) will be the bait of choice by many bluegill anglers, but small artificial jigs (tube lure or curly-tailed) or beetle spins (white or yellow-colored) will also account for some good stringers of fish even on places like Lake Jesup.
Review on Lake Toho

An awesome day on Lake Toho with bassonline.com guide and Captain John Leech January 2024 My wife had a business trip in the Orlando area so I tagged along and scheduled a trip with Capt. John Leech in late January hoping to catch some big pre spawn bass on Lake Toho. A big cold front came through the day before our trip so the potential for a tough day was there. With the expert help of Capt. John, and despite the very cool conditions, we were able to catch fish all day long! We caught a lot in the 2-4 pound range with a couple of 5 pounders and one that went 6.32 for big fish of the day. It was an excellent day and John was wonderful company! I Highly recommend Capt. John Leech if you are looking for a person who flat knows where they are and how to catch them! By the way this is my second trip to Florida in the past year. I have booked through bassonline.com both times one on Okeechobee and then this trip to Toho. The trips were professional and exactly what I asked for and paid for each time. Book with confidence!

Reliable and fun! John was an amazing host! He made our boat ride very fun and his boat was very well kept.. He suggested we meet in the morning instead of in the afternoon because of how hot it can get out for us and the fish. We caught a good amount of fish too! John was also prompt and reliable. If you're looking for a world class top notch service, this is the real deal!

Bass fishing trip with Capt John Leech I set up a Bass fishing trip with Capt John Leech for my two sons and me. Capt John Leech called the night before and said he had a location closer to where I was located that had great fishing. He did not disappoint. We put over 20 Bass in the boat including a few fish between 6 to 8 pounds. My 12 year old son landed an 8.2 pound Bass that he will never forget. Capt John Leech is an exceptional professional guide who shared his knowledge about Bass fishing with us and assured we had a unbelievable great time fishing. I would highly recommend him for a guide.

Family Fishing on Lake Toho We booked with Bass Online last week and sure are glad we did. The phone reservation people and process is ok, it helps if you have done some research on the area and really read the website for details and specifics. We had a group of 6 with two teenage boys looking to get on the water, catch fish see alligators and have a great experience. We were set up for a pontoon boat with Captain Steve Niemoeoller who is great. Very professional and organized for setting up the day and covering details. He has a very laid back and comfortable style and personality to keep it low key. We caught a 12+ fish on a short 3-4 hour trip, would have caught a lot more as they were biting and on we were just not great at setting hooks and bringing them in. The wind was really blowing and Captain Steve moved us around to quite spots and kept us catching fish and comfortable. All in all it was a great day and I strongly recommend for family, kids and anyone who is looking for a good day of fishing with a very experienced Captain.

Bass Fishing with Capt. Devon Fished with Capt. Devon Dickerson and have to say it was an amazing experience! Extremely knowledgeable, patient, and knows where to find the âHoneyâ holes. We caught bass from 2 pounds up to 8. Hooked a couple of Alligator Gars and had fun reeling them in. Definitely if youâre visiting the Orlando/Kissimmee/St.Cloud area he is the one to fish with. If you have first timers out there, he has the patience you want to teach you the correct way to catch Bass! Thank you Capt. Devon for the great experience!

Winter Fishing with Captain John Leech We enjoyed out time with Captain John Leech. He is a knowledgeable Captain. He shares his knowledge of the waters and fish. This was our third year fishing with him in January. Despite the weather at times we have always enjoyed our time on the water with him. We look forward to seeing him again next year. Lake Tohopekaliga has been good to us as well as Lake Conway in 2018. Joanne and I had a great time~156 fish combined on Conway in 2018. This year Joanne caught her biggest ever 7.0 pounder on Tohopekaliga just before the MLF tournament started. Captain John Leech makes your experience worth while. Despite this years cold weather we had a blast. Thanks John.Ron & Joanne BunnellMassachusetts

Bass at Lake Toho My son and I recently took the opportunity to try bass fishing in Florida. After looking at a number of fishing trips, we settled for booking with IOutdoor. Our captain for the trip was John Leech. Needless to say, the trip was a success. John proved to be very knowledgeable for the lake and worked wonderfully to meet, and ultimately exceed our expectations. We were able to catch and boat a number of fish with many larger specimens. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and will definitely book with John again if we are in Orlando. Thank you for a wonderful time!!!!

Lake Toho Fishing With Capt. Brent Nelson Bass fishermen, how do these conditions hit you - just after a full moon, 39 degrees (yep, 39 degrees in Orlando) and a 15 mph. wind. Despite these despicable conditions, Capt. Brent Nelson put us on fish. We booked a 6 hour trip on Lake Toho with Capt. Brent. We boated 24 bass, plus some pike and gar. Shiners were the bait of choice, but we gave soft plastics a shot. Brent never let up in his pursuit for bass and we fished many places on the lake. His knowledge of Lake Toho and bass fishing was excellent! With todayâs conditions, most people would have stayed home, but we caught fish and had a terrific time. We will certainly use Brent on our next visit to Orlando and I highly recommend him!! Heâs a fun guy that will do everything possible to make sure that you have a fantastic bass fishing experience!

Amazing Day on Lake Toho with Captain Steve Canât Steve Niemoeller was a first class guide. For me and my son, fishing is our favorite activity to do together and our trip did not disappoint. We went to one spot and never left! Typically when weâve gone with other guides weâll catch a few then hope around the lake but Capt Steve urged us to be patient. We caught over 20 high quality Florida bass in 4 hours. Highly recommend and will definitely be calling him next time weâre in town!

Fishing Lake Tohopekeliga We had a great day catching and releasing largemouth bass with Captain John Leach on 11/14/2018.The trip started at 6 a.m. and it was almost nonstop until 10:00. It slowed down after that which expected, but we still boated several more. Captain John is very patient, experienced and let's you do as much of the catch and release as you want. I highly recommend him. David G.

Fishing with Captain John Leech with bassonline.com Had a great day on Lake Toho with Captain John Leech! Captain John is an experienced guide who had us catching fish within minutes of leaving the dock! He shared his wealth of knowledge of Lake Toho & was great about sharing tips and answering our questions!! He told us before we left the dock they had been catching a lot of fish and nice size fish! He definitely delivered, not only was the number of fish unbelievable, but every fish was hitting in the 3-5 lb range, maybe no throphies on this trip, but I have never caught this many bass in this size range! Canât wait to bring my family back to fish with Captain John! Check him out on Bassonline.com

Terrific Time On Toho This was my first time fishing in Florida and was looking forward to a different bass fishing experience. My guide, Steve Niemoeller, fishes Big Toho as one of his main venues and knows this place like the back of his hand. Besides putting me on fish throughout the day he also had some great inside info on the lake and some greater stories about previous trips here and out on the flats. With a minimum amount of tackle and baits, unlike what I fish with in California, I stopped counting after 10 fish in first couple of hours, Steve claiming that it was the best morning bite he's had in a couple weeks. I continued to catch some quality fish during the rest of the trip and and would do it again if I ever get back to central Florida. Steve is a true pro in guiding and a great people person so if you want to experience both great fishing and a some southern hospitality, you can ask for him personally when you book your trip.

Captain John Leech Another great outing. My 3rd with Captain John. He is great with experienced and novice fisherman. He strives to put you on fish. Been fishing for 50 years and caught my career largest bass with him on trip 2. The company is also easy to work with, in fact, looking to do some other trips with them on other lakes.

Lake Toho Bass Fishing Had a great trip with Captain Steve at Lake Toho, Florida. Weather wasnât nice but still caught 18 fish with both live baits and lures. Donât worry if you are a beginner like me! Captain Steve will teach you everything you need to know about angling. Highly recommend for people who want to have a great experience in Orlando besides Disney.

Grandson lake fishing trip Capt Dumas was a terrific guide, very knowledgeable and personable. His boat was well equipped. We had every thing needed for a successful day, went to where the fish were, but the fish didn't cooperate. We got several good bites but couldn't bring in the fish. My 12 year old grandson was already a skilled fisherman, but I am a novice. Capt Dumas was patient with me and was a good teacher. Would definitely recommend this as a good fishing trip and an easy way to book it.

Father Daughter Fishing Trip Excellent trip! Capn John Leech provides a genuine fishing experience that includes knowledge of the Local Fishing Lakes that goes beyond generic fishing reports. My choice was lake Toho, he called me the night before and suggested Lake Butler and we were extremely satisfied. My daughter who had never been bass fishing, caught her first bass which was a 2 pounder! She is now an avid bass fisher as every bass she caught was over 2 lbs. We averaged 7 fish per hour totaling 28 for our 4 hour "run." Capn Leech has a way about him, that fishermen young and old, can appreciate. He's also conservation conscience, caring about the environment and the fish his passengers catch. His tutorial skills, teach the customers how to catch fish and release them without harming the fish. All 28 of our Bass were released "alive." Looking forward to another trip! Highly recommended.

Lake Toho with Captain Steve Niemoeller Fishing on Lake Toho with Capt. Steve was one of the best times I have had on the water . This was my 1st time to fish in Florida . Capt. Steve knows how to find and catch fish in these massive lakes in Fla. I learned a lot about different techniques to help me catch more fish at home in Texas. I'm coming back this spring and for many years to come and I'm for sure fishing with Capt. Steve and BassOnline .com Only way to do it right !!!!

Cpt Leech - Butler chain of lakes My wife and I booked with bass online. I was a little skeptical at how easy it was to book a trip - one phone call and a follow up and we were done! Meet up with Cpt Leech who put us on fish right away! He is a great guide! Highly recommend
Poor John Well didn't go exactly as planned. Really wanted a morning trip when it was a little cooler and the fish were biting better. John got sick and that happens. He really went out of his way to get us set up with Steve, and I appreciated that. It just ended up being a really slow & hot afternoon. But I would do it again and plan to soon.....just in the morning!!

Capt. John Leech I recently booked a three person fishing trip with bassonline.com on lake toho. Me and my two newphews could not possiblely have had a better time. Capt John treat me and my nephews like we were family from the very start. We left the dock ahead of schedule and within minutes of stopping at the first stop John had us on the fish. The memories that Capt john helped me and my nephews create are in measurable. We wish were we're staying in the area longer, we would have booked another trip. Capt John took the time to explain to us a lot of what he knew about the lake and the eco system in the area. The fishing was absolutely amazing. Catch after catch of big large mouth bass. We could not possible have had a better time on the water that day. Thank you Capt John.

Lake Toho bass fishing with Capt Steve Niemoeller We paid for wild shiners and a half day trip. Fishing reports had been good in the area. Captain Steve chose to go to Lake Toho. He arrived with Shiners already in the boat from the previous days fishing. Most were dead in the bait well and the rest died as soon as we put them in the water. No one had a bite the entire time. To his credit he offered to not charge us for the trip but that wasnât the point. He offered to not charge for the bait and I was insulted. Maybe Iâve just been lucky, but my previous experiences have been off the scale compared to this one.

Fantastic Day w/ Capt Leech on Lake Toho! Left all the research up to my 14 year old son! Capt Leech was the best! We let him guide us and it was perfect! He called us to confirm 24 hours before the trip and he advised us on what we should be doing! It couldn't have been any better. Good man, great guide w/ a wealth of knowledge not just on Lake Toho but fishing! We spotted an amazing symbol of Freedom! Bald Eagle! Truly couldn't thank you him enough. We can't wait to come back! Challenge now is we're spoiled! We want fish like this at home in Virginia!

Awesome Fishing Trip with Captn Steve Niemoeller We fished on Friday, May 27th, 2016, with Captn Steve Niemoeller on Lake Toho. We left Big Toho Marina about 6am. At Sunrise about 6:30am, the first fish struck our shiners and my Fiance's Rod was doubled over. She reeled in and landed a 9lb 5oz. Bass of a Lifetime. It was beautiful! The bass then began to feed for the next 2.5 hours at Captn Steve's secret spot. My Fiance boated another 6 pounder. I boated 3 bass between 1 and 4 pounds. My Dad boated a bass of about 2 pounds. My Fiance also landed an Alligator Gar and a Chain Pickeral. And we lost several fish or missed them because of our wimpy hooksets! The action was consistent and exciting!!! We had an amazing morning. I have been bass fishing in FL for over twenty years. Captn Steve Niemoeller is the cream of the crop when it comes to guiding for giant largemouth Bass. He has a special gift of finding large bass and getting them to bite. Anyone whom fishes regularly knows that it does not always go your way; however, with Captn Steve you are more than likely going to have a very memorable day. I would suggest you go to the lake he suggests at the time he suggests. He fishes a lot and he knows what is going on. Tight lines to all the anglers out there.

Lake Toho May, 2016 Originally booked trip for St Johns River but the captain called day before suggesting Lake Toho instead due to the poor bite on the river. My bucket list was to fish anywhere in Florida for the first time so I agreed - no problem at all. I brought my nephew along and requested we use shiners to hopefully ensure he had a fun day catching fish. That he did for sure. The captain was very patient with him while he learned the nuances of bobber fishing with live bait. Me, I was content to just throw a 7.5" plastic worm all day and was pleasantly surprised that most of the big fish were caught on it. My only disappointment with the trip was fishing proximity to the launch ramp. We started the day by motoring 1.3 miles across the bay the some grass and pads. Power Poled down for 3 hours while my nephew fished with his shiners and I fan casted the plastic worm. Actually had a great morning - lots of nice fish in this one area. Next, on the trolling motor for about 75 yards and Power Poled down again for another hour. Hopped over to a bait and tackle shop for a quick bathroom break and then headed back to within 100 yards of the launch ramp where we anchored and fished for another two hours with very little success. The captain offered to turn my 8 hour day into a 6 hour day and I accepted. He did cut the price of the trip to account for this. I just feel like the captain wasn't really into the job on this particular day. I felt he was more interested in fishing for tournament released fish and not burning a little more fuel to go hunt for a better bite. I would have liked to have seen more of Lake Toho.

Excellent Bass Fishing guide! My husband and i had a fantastic experience with Capt. John Leech on lake Toho. He knew exactly were to fish and we were on fish from the moment we got there. We ran out of bait twice! We were able to catch a lot of Bass and most over 6 lbs. my husband's fish was over 8 lbs and my biggest just over 7. Definitely a trip to remember!

Great Third Generation Fishing Guide I've fished multiple times with Kip Grunloh and each time has been great. He's a real pro, funny and very patient. This time I brought a hard-core fishing buddy (the type that brings his own gear) and even he was impressed. All you need to bring is a positive attitude.

Fished Lake ToHo--No Go-- My guide asked me to pay for all the live bait which, having fished all over the world, I have never been asked to do. However, I agreed and told him the night before if he thought the only way to catch fish was with live bait, then let's not run out. We ran out a little over half the trip and never caught another fish on alternative tackle. I would stay away from these "corporate" guiding services that are too big to care about repeat, small guy business.
