Okeechobee Mat Fishing
This archived Lake Okeechobee report follows a two-boat trip from the Belle Glade side of the lake. The group included Mike and Ben, Capt. Mark Rose, Capt. Brian Brown, and friends.
The historical pattern centered on matted vegetation and protected water. Water temperature was reported at 78 degrees during the trip, and the anglers focused on areas where largemouth bass were using overhead vegetation as cover.
Wild shiners were the most productive bait on this outing. Each boat caught more than 20 bass, with the better fish reaching about 4.5 pounds.
The durable lesson is not that one mat or bait will always produce. Lake Okeechobee vegetation changes with water level, wind, season, and habitat conditions. Use healthy mats, clean water, bait activity, and current fish positioning as clues rather than relying on an old waypoint.
