Deer Point LakeDeer Point Lake History

Construction of a dam across the northern portion of North Bay in 1961 impounded water flows from Econfina Creek, Bear Creek, Cedar Creek, and Bayou George, thus creating Deer Point Lake. Econfina Creek is the most significant tributary to Deer Point Lake, contributing about 57 to 79 percent of the lake’s inflow. The Deer Point Dam, managed by the Northwest Florida Water Management District, controls the outflow of water into North Bay. Deer Point Lake also provides a valuable watershed for fish and wildlife, including osprey nesting grounds.

Deer Point Lake is a 5,000-acre impoundment located 7 miles north of Panama City off US 231 and SR 77 at Southport. Deer Point is fed by natural freshwater streams and supplies more than 760 million gallons of fresh water daily to Panama City and the surrounding areas. The lake can be accessed by taking US 231 north from Panama City (6 miles) to C2321 west (1.5 miles); turn right on C2311 (3.5 miles); the ramp (Highpoint) is on the left.

Deerpoint Lake Fishing

There are also boat ramps located on C2321on either side of the dam. A fishing pier is located near the boat ramp on the west side of the dam. This lake is best known for its shellcracker (redear sunfish) fishing during the spring (April through June) using earthworms as live bait. Fly fishing for shellcracker during the spring can also be very productive when fishing early morning, late afternoon, and evening.

Bream (bluegill) fishing is also good in the spring using crickets and earthworms. Although largemouth bass fishing is best in the spring to early summer and again in the fall using plastic worms and a great place to use crankbaits. The good’ole Rapala minnow lure is very effective for bass when fished near the shoreline.

Best Opportunities

Deer Point Lake is mity best known for its shellcracker fishing, although Bayou George and the flats area at the confluence of Bayou George and Deer Point are also popular largemouth spots. Also, try targeting docks and boathouses along the creek channels and at the mouth of Bayou George. Anglers should exercise extreme caution during boat operations due to the tremendous amount of flooded cypress stumps and snags found in the lake. Connects to the Gulf of Mexico.

Deer Point Lake is to be enjoyed, but it should also be protected so future generations will benefit from the clear fresh drinking water that the lake offers. So when anglers cast in their lines for that trophy largemouth bass, or campers enjoy the clear water, they should remember to help keep the lake a clean and beautiful place to visit. Deer Point is a wonderful resource and an excellent place for a getaway. The whole family will enjoy Deer Point Lake.

Good Lake

First off Tharp’s Camp no longer exists. This lake is a great fairy shallow lake yes has some spots that reach 20+ feet but for the most part the lake is around 10 feet deep, In this lake you can catch Pike, Large mouth bass, warmouth bass and multiple species of pan fish including crappie. you don't need a boat to have a good fishing experience here...
