Lake Okeechobee has been getting some bad press lately. Captain Mark Shepard is here to confirm that the Algae on Lake Okeechobee have cleared up completely. Algae blooms are a reoccurring natural process that the lake goes through every year. It has not caused any fish to kill on the lake and the bass fishing has been absolutely fantastic.

Captain Mark Shepard had the pleasure of fishing with Max and Jessica who were traveling to Florida from Canada. This young couple was an absolute blast to fish with and they had a lot of fun. These late summer months call for light tackle fish which always is something great to experience. If you want to catch quality largemouth bass and feel their true power, this is the time of year to come do it.

Summer also brings about a unique approach to bass fishing here on Lake Okeechobee. The bass tends to school up heavily in open water and outside weed lines feeding on shad. Early morning is the best time to come fishing Lake Okeechobee. You can throw topwater artificial baits and have an absolute blast catching bass. These schooling fish are filled with shad and fight really hard. Most are in the range of 1-3 pounds.

Okeechobee never fails

Max got the chance to experience the rare occasion of a school of big fish. When you explore Lake Okeechobee Bass Fishing you never know what the next cast will bring you. Max threw an artificial bait and got a big explosion. As he set the hook, he knew it was a big bass! Watching that fish come out of the water was one of the most breathtaking moments for him. The next thing that was amazing was getting his personal best bass in his hands. Max landed a 7.25-pound female largemouth bass that was long and extremely exciting to catch on light tackle.

Along with the big fish, Max and Jessica caught some quality numbers and size bass. Water levels are higher than normal making for a great day of bass fishing. It allowed us to get back into places that we normally can’t. Captain Mark is looking forward to fishing with this amazing couple again in the future!
