Shenango River Lake is a 3,560-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, near Hermitage and Sharpsville. Its broad flats, creek channels, submerged structure, and changing seasonal water levels support a varied warmwater fishery. Channel catfish are another major opportunity. PFBC captured more than 1,100 channel catfish during its 2023 trap-net survey, including many fish in the 25- to 30-inch range. Flathead catfish are present in smaller numbers, while bluegill, yellow perch, white bass, brown bullhead, and yellow bullhead add variety.

Shenango also supports largemouth and smallmouth bass under Big Bass Regulations. PFBC’s 2023 night-electrofishing work documented stable bass numbers and quality fish from both species. Hybrid striped bass are stocked when fingerlings are available, and anglers may also encounter walleye, northern pike, and a limited number of muskellunge.

How to Fish Shenango River Lake

For largemouth bass, begin around protected coves, wood, shoreline cover, and shallow flats during warming periods. Spinnerbaits, bladed jigs, crankbaits and Texas-rigged soft plastics help cover water, while jigs and slower plastics are useful when fish hold tight to cover. Smallmouth bass often favor firmer bottom, riprap, points, channel transitions, and current-influenced areas; tubes, Ned rigs, drop-shot rigs, and small crankbaits are practical choices.

Crappie anglers can use small jigs or minnows around submerged cover and channel edges. Electronics are valuable when schools suspend in open water. During spring, fish may move shallower around protected spawning areas; later in the year, trolling or controlled drifting can help locate scattered schools.

For channel catfish, fish cut bait, live bait where legal, or prepared bait along creek channels, points and flats that offer access to deeper water. Hybrid striped bass and white bass may follow open-water baitfish, so watch for bird activity, surface feeding, and concentrations on sonar. Casting spoons, swimbaits and other shad-profile lures can be effective when schools are active.

Catfish remain a strong option, and open-water hybrids or white bass may be located around baitfish. Fall cooling can renew shallow bass activity and concentrate forage along points and creek channels.
