History of Miami Falls Canals
In southern Miami-Dade County between Kendall and Cutler Ridge, squeeze between a Fashion Mall and Outback Restaurant. You will find a series of canals constructed in the mid-1900s; they were created by cutting out the local coral rock to make channels to manage and flow water.
One of the most breathtaking parts of the Miami Falls Canal System is the urban feel you get when cruising in the clear green waters.
The Miami Falls Fishing
Home to the exotic, the butterfly peacock bass is the main species of choice when fishing the canal system. You can also experience Florida largemouth bass, many cichlid family species, freshwater tarpon, and even snook. The average size of peacock bass you will experience will be between 2 to 3 pounds, some smaller, some larger.
The Miami Falls remains one of the best locations to land a trophy peacock bass weighing 5+ pounds. The Florida record is 9.08 and came from a nearby fishery.
The surrounding coral rocks are what the peacock bass thrive and hold to for structure. Most of the canals have vertical drops and edges that can range reach up to 30 feet. The average depth is 12 feet deep. Several lakes can be found with the system; two five-acre lakes all have sand-bottoms that are 10 feet deep.
If you haven’t experienced a Florida Peacock Bass, they are incredibly hard strikers and fighters.
Boating the Miami Falls Area
Don’t speed through the canals as it is home to many South Florida residents. Additionally, many local homeowners have posted NO wake signs; please accommodate these areas.
Safety first, this place has many blind corners, also multi-user groups that paddleboard, jetski, and kayak. Be patient and careful; it’s not a fishery to be in a hurry to go anywhere quick!
Why not enjoy a mid-day fishing adventure on the Miami Falls Canal System? Another great way to take in the sunshine. These exotic species love the warm weather.
Enjoy the beautiful South Florida homes while fishing. Take pictures as well of the abundance of wildlife, including iguanas of all colors and sizes.
Land your trophy bass next time visiting Miami or the state of Florida!
