West Point Lake is located on the Alabama-Georgia state line. The lake is overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of engineers, and it extends 35 miles alongside the Chattahoochee River. Fishing, camping, boating, and other recreational activities are all available along the lake’s 525 miles of shoreline which is encircled by thick, deep forests and rolling fields. There are many parks for day-use, camping areas, beaches, fishing piers, hunting areas, and two commercial marinas. Nature pathways, boat platforms with courtesy docks, and picnic shelters are common features in many of the city’s parks like McGee Bridge Park.

Environmental changes have lowered nutrient flows that formerly produced pea-green lakes and excellent largemouth bass fishing, once too fruitful due to Atlanta’s upstream effect. In some of the less fruitful areas of the lake, fish are shifting from largemouth to spotted bass. It’s still a great time to go fishing for bass, although there are more spotted bass being caught these days. Particularly during the renowned spring rush up the Chattahoochee River to Franklin, hybrid bass fishing is excellent.
