Fishing West Point Lake
West Point Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Chattahoochee River along the Georgia–Alabama border. The Corps lists 25,900 surface acres and more than 500 miles of shoreline, with public recreation areas, ramps and fishing access. LaGrange and West Point are useful Georgia bases for a trip. Wooded shores, parks and varied fishing opportunities make the reservoir useful for more than one kind of outing.
What fish are in West Point Lake?
The Georgia DNR fishing forecasts cover largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, hybrid bass, striped bass and channel catfish at West Point. The Corps fishing overview also names bass, catfish, crappie and bream. Creek mouths, points, channels and seasonal movement all matter, but productive water shifts with lake level, weather and forage. Use the current DNR forecast and a lake chart to choose the day’s approach instead of an old “hot spot” promise.
Lake size, depth and seasonal conditions
West Point Lake covers about 25,900 acres. There is no single fixed depth at every point; channel and cove depths change as the Corps manages reservoir elevation. For a depth at a particular fishing spot, consult an up-to-date bathymetric chart and the current water level; a single maximum-depth figure does not describe boating conditions across the lake. Bass, crappie and hybrids can all be pursued in different seasons, but access and fish position vary with conditions.
Boat ramps and the 2026 drawdown
The Corps lists launches around the lake and publishes boat-ramp conditions. Its September 2026 notice reports a scheduled drawdown for West Point Dam maintenance. Water elevation and launch usability may change during the work. Check the Corps notice and the exact ramp on the trip date, especially when bringing a larger boat or planning to use an unfamiliar cove.
Georgia–Alabama fishing rules
Parts of the lake fall under the Georgia–Alabama reciprocal fishing agreement. A qualifying license from either state is recognized in covered border waters, with a stated exception upstream of Georgia Highway 109 on the Chattahoochee arm. The published agreement also includes a 14-inch minimum for largemouth bass in West Point Lake. Read the current boundary, license and harvest rules before fishing; tributaries outside the covered waters may require separate attention.
Planning a guided day
No captain is currently assigned to West Point Lake in the guide roster displayed here. If a nearby captain offers a trip, confirm West Point Lake itself, the state side and meeting ramp, available dates, target species, party size and current water conditions. For regional options, see the Georgia fishing lakes and Lake Allatoona guide. Get the precise departure location from the captain before setting out.
