Wildcat Lake is a clear, relatively deep lake in the Ocala National Forest near the intersection of State Roads 40 and 19. It is one of the better-known fishing and day-use lakes in the forest and has long attracted anglers targeting largemouth bass, sunfish and black crappie.
Published size estimates vary with source and water level. A Florida LAKEWATCH bathymetric survey measured about 258 acres in 2001, while current federal recreation material describes approximately 335 surface acres. Rather than treating either number as permanent, anglers should expect lake area and shoreline conditions to change with seasonal water levels.
Wildcat Lake Fishing
Largemouth bass are a major target, but Wildcat Lake has an important special regulation: the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requires all black bass to be released immediately. Anglers should check current FWC regulations before fishing because special rules can change.
Federal recreation information also identifies sunfish and black crappie as popular Wildcat Lake targets.
