Lake Wauburg

Lake Wauburg is a fertile 254-acre lake in a state park (electric trolling motors only, so know your fishing regulations) and is famous for black crappie more than any other species. The fertile green water supports shad and deep grass line fishing spots that hold good fish. The big largemouth bass is caught in spring and redear sunfish and bluegill during spring and summer. There is a nice campground here for a relaxing and great location for a fishing vacation.

Fishing the grass edge with a shallow running crankbait or light-colored spinnerbait is always suitable for largemouth bass. Black crappie fishing should pick up in November and peak around Christmas; bluegill and redear sunfish will feed on grass shrimp and crickets. Small tube rigs for panfish are deadly when tipped with a section of mealworm in good fishing spots. For a different presentation, when using tube baits, insert the jig head only halfway into the body of the tube. This provides a small air pocket in the front that helps plan the tube left or right on its descent.

Gainesville Fl Lakes

The best part about Gainesville fishing is how close the city is to the most famous bass fisheries in the state. Great fishing locations are known for their trophy bass with consistent numbers: Orange Lake, Santa Fe Lake, Rodman Reservoir, and Lochloosa Lake.

These fisheries have heavily vegetated dark waters, the ideal habitat for largemouth bass. As a result, these areas produce giant bass in large quantities.

Water Quality

There was a period of low water levels from a giant sinkhole in many of the area lakes, including the fish killed on Lochloosa Lake in the 1990s. Unfortunately, these type of events wipe out many trophy bass that was previously thriving here.

In recent years, these fisheries have been greatly restored with sufficient rainfall, restoration efforts, and less fishing pressure. As a result, there has been an explosion in the fish populations.

These area lakes have recovered and back to thriving with tons of baitfish and consistently producing quality largemouth bass in the 10 to 13-pound range.
