Lake Tarpon IN FLORIDA

About Lake Tarpon

You will find some bass lakes within reach of the city of Tampa. Lake Thonotosassa and Edward Medard Reservoir, located near Tampa area, offer average bass fishing. But Lake Tarpon is a little farther away to the north side of Tampa. It is regarded as one of top bass fishing lakes in Florida, boasting healthy largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and alligator gar populations.

North Pinellas County, Lake Tarpon, is just a few miles from Tarpon Springs. It is renowned for its trophy-sized largemouth bass and, on occasion, producing ten-pound bass!

Lake Fishing Options

The city of Tampa and the surrounding area in Florida can provide various saltwater fishing opportunities, but if you need a break from the harsh saltwater environment or if the wind is making it challenging, consider freshwater fishing for largemouth bass.
Whether you are a Tampa resident, vacationer looking to get away from the city’s hustle, or on business looking for a trophy fish, bass fishing is a fun and healthy outdoor activity that can be enjoyed by relative novices anglers as well as lifelong pros.

More about Tarpon Springs

Fishing Opportunities

Because of its location, on weekends, the lake hosts many bass tournaments. However, only a few of us knowledgeable guides fish the lake daily, and we encourage us to use it during the week if their schedule permits.
For many years Lake Tarpon has held the Florida state record for largemouth bass caught using a wild shiner for bait. The lake is nearly nine miles from end to end, covering a total of over 2,500 acres. To cover it quickly,  a chatter bait seems to work well. Surrounded by houses and resorts, there are lots of fishing opportunities.

Techniques & Species

The lake bottom has deep-water holes and the shallow edges with grass beds. The lake has a thriving population of BluegillCrappie, Blue Tilapia, Catfish, and Sunfish in addition to good bass fishing.

The daily bag limit for largemouth bass is five, and only one of the five may be over 22 inches long. This more conservative fishing regulation, together with environmentally-minded angling, has helped preserve the stock and thereby improve the overall quality of bass fishing in the lake has proven to be very successful.

Boat Ramps

Two county parks border the lake, to the east John Chestnut Park and the west A.L. Anderson Park. These parks form a natural complement to the lake’s tranquility and provide numerous comfort areas and, if needed, shelter from inclement weather for boaters and anglers.
Both parks offer an abundance of recreational facilities, including picnic areas with grills, play equipment, walking, cycling trails, and boat launching facilities. Characterized by hilly terrain, Anderson Park wooded areas, and beautiful vistas overlooking the lake are ideal locations for restroom and lunch breaks from a hard day fishing.

Lake Tarpon Fishing Reports

F. A. Q of lake Tarpon
Is it safe to swim in Lake Tarpon?

The lake is a regional recreational destination and is renowned for its largemouth bass fishing. Although Lake Tarpon is designated as a fishing and swimming lake, it fails to meet the EPA’s standards and is therefore listed as an impaired lake because it is over-polluted.

Are there alligators in Tarpon Springs FL?
  • Yes, there are Alligators! Right in the midst of the hectic U.S. 19 corridor is a quiet refuge with places to sit, walk, and just veg out. Situated on Lake Tarpon away from the crowded beaches, food vendors, and souvenir shops this venue offers beautiful views, fishing from shore, and – of course – alligators.
Is Lake Tarpon man made?

Unfortunately, that has not worked out so well. The waters of Lake Tarpon are not only brown from the surrounding cypress trees but are now filled with runoff water containing fertilizer and other chemicals, causing it to be unfit for human consumption. Now, the lake is only fit for recreational purposes.

Does Lake Tarpon have Gulf access?

Long a favored Florida recreation area, Lake Tarpon is interesting in its underground connection to the Gulf of Mexico via Spring Bayou in Tarpon Springs. … Watergates operated by the South West Florida Water Management District are closed during high tide to prevent saltwater from entering the lake.

How do people dress for fishing charter?

In layers is best, but fishing is casual. A sundress for ladies with bikini underneath is not uncommon. Khaki shorts for guys is as dressed up as anyone ever gets, long pants work if you’re not using to the sun. In the same vein, there are no “styles.” Get comfortable with whatever dress code is the norm. But always try to wear light colors as they are cooler.

Where can I park my car at lake?

There is parking at most all the boat ramps which are city parks, as well for boat trailers. This location is free but subject to change with ut notice.  Your captain can tell you the complete cost if any if you use Uber or Lyft there is no cost to enter.
