Lake Haines is part of the North Winter Haven Chain of Lakes in Polk County, Florida. It is a Winter Haven fishing lake; the nearby city of Haines City is a different place. FWC lists Lake Haines among the North Chain waters anglers can access and identifies it as a crappie location.
The North Winter Haven Chain supports bass, crappie, bluegill and redear sunfish fishing. On Lake Haines, look for shoreline vegetation, canal connections and changes in depth as conditions shift. For seasonal advice across the chain, see the FWC Winter Haven Chain fishing forecast and our Winter Haven Chain guide.
FWC highlights the cattail stands on Lake Haines for bass anglers. A plastic worm or another soft bait worked along vegetation is a useful starting point; adjust to current water level, light and wind rather than relying on a fixed depth. The broader chain also has docks, canals and submerged grass, so a small move between types of cover can change the day.
For crappie, FWC identifies Haines as a North Chain option. In cooler months, anglers often drift or troll minnows or small jigs near submerged vegetation. As water warms and fish move shallower, work the edges of cattails, bulrush and lily pads. For bluegill and redear sunfish, try a small hook and live bait under a float near vegetation, while checking current bag limits before keeping fish.
The North and South sections of the Winter Haven Chain connect through a lock between lakes Conine and Hartridge. Plan any route through the connected lakes around current lock operation and water levels. If you are fishing from shore, use designated public access and verify parking rules; the chain’s many residential shorelines are not all public. A guide listed for the wider chain may serve different lakes, so confirm Lake Haines specifically when booking.
FWC names Lake Haines as one of the North Chain access lakes. Check its public ramp finder and local conditions before launching. Review current freshwater regulations and arrange any guide trip through a captain who confirms the lake and date.
