Fishing South Lake & Salt Lake
SOUTH LAKE
South Lake is off SR 46 between Mims and Geneva. From I-95, go west on SR 46 for approximately ½ mile, then south on Turpentine Road for approximately 2 miles. At the end of Turpentine Road, go west on Panther Lane, approximately ¼ mile, which ends at Arch Road. Go south on Arch Road, approximately ¼ mile until the intersection of Paces Landing Road.
The Salt Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses more than 7,800 acres in Brevard County and borders three lakes: South & Salt Lake, and Loughman Lake. A former cattle ranch, Salt Lake WMA is now managed by the FWC. The St. Johns River Water Management District and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection jointly own it.
South Lake is a Special Place
You will find a diverse range of natural communities here, including freshwater marsh, oak scrub, scrubby flatwoods, mesic flatwoods, and oak/cabbage palm hammocks. You can hunt abundant feral hogs and turkey and hike, ride bicycles or horses, or picnic in the quiet of the pretty hammock on the edge of South Lake. Perhaps you will glimpse the rare Florida scrub jay in recently burned scrub or see a bald eagle flying overhead.
South Lake and Salt Lake can be accessed through nearby boat ramps. South Lake may be accessed through Fox Lake. Nearby Fox Lake Park has a boat ramp and parking area. Salt Lake may be accessed from a boat ramp on SR 46 or at the terminus of Paces Landing Road.
