Fishing Doctors Lake and the Inlet
Doctors Lake has easy access to the St John’s River through a narrow connection. The approximately 3,400-acre lake is near Jacksonville.
Access is at Lakeshore Boat Ramp located off SR17; take Doctors Inlet Rd to Lakeshore Dr to the boat ramp.
Both the inlet and the hard sand bottom areas in this stretch of St. Johns (south of I-295) support healthy stands of eelgrass and excellent fishing for largemouth bass and redear sunfish. Schooling bass are present all year with mild currents, and redear are caught in spring, summer, and fall. Check depth, footing and current before considering any shore access.
Nearby Black Creek is a separate waterbody, which has an excellent vegetated shoreline. It is a good water body for black crappie year-round and all panfish species (especially redbreast and bluegill sunfish) during spring, summer, and fall. Striped bass utilizes Black Creek as a cool-water refuge in summer and is present here and around St. Johns River bridge pilings, commonly during winter months.
Doctors Lake Fishing Tips
The FWC regional forecast covers Doctors Inlet, the lower St. Johns River and Black Creek together. Its striped bass and seasonal saltwater observations concern that broader region and should not be read as a guarantee for Doctors Lake. For bass and bream, look for vegetation, firm bottom and cover beside moving water; fish live bait or artificial lures suited to the depth.
What to Target
Look for the structure that allows fish to rest in the current while feeding on passing items carried by the rising or falling tides. When the tide moves, retrieve artificial lures in the direction the current is flowing. Black Creek is another great spot to fish for bass and bream. The spatterdock edges lining Black Creek provide excellent cover and attract fish to the shallower areas. Standard artificial baits are great for pulling in bass on Doctors Lake and live bait, such as worms and crickets, which is very effective for bream, especially red-breast sunfish.
Access, Water Conditions and Trip Planning
Use the Clay County boat ramp and pier directory to confirm Lakeshore Boat Ramp and Doctors Lake Park access, hours and facilities before travel. The St. Johns River Water Management District’s Doctors Lake restoration page explains nutrient reduction work. Check current local water-quality notices rather than assuming conditions are the same throughout the lake.
This page has no verified Doctors Lake-specific charter inventory. For a broader St. Johns River fishing trip, confirm the captain’s Doctors Lake coverage and launch before booking. Follow Florida freshwater fishing regulations and license requirements.
