Winter Grass Fishing on Lake Okeechobee
This archived Lake Okeechobee trip report follows Steve, Bill, and Frank on a winter outing with Captain Mark Rogers. The day is preserved as historical field proof of how healthy grass, live bait, wind, and cooler seasonal conditions can shape a productive Okeechobee bass trip.
Conditions were chilly, with southeast wind putting a ripple on the water. Live shiners were the most productive presentation during this outing, and grass was the primary structure the group targeted.
Shiner Fishing Results and Bass Catches
The anglers worked through five dozen live shiners and caught several quality largemouth bass. The two best fish weighed about 5 pounds each.
The lasting lesson is not that one winter pattern will work every day. Lake Okeechobee vegetation, water level, wind, temperature, and fish location change constantly. Healthy grass and bait activity are better clues than an old waypoint.
