Presque Isle Bay Fishing at a Glance
Presque Isle State Park forms a peninsula around Presque Isle Bay at Erie, Pennsylvania. The bay provides more protected water than the open lake, which makes it important for shore anglers, boaters and anglers who need an alternative when Lake Erie wind makes the main lake uncomfortable.
Pennsylvania DCNR lists common Lake Erie species including perch, bass, walleye, trout and steelhead. In Presque Isle Bay, common species also include panfish, northern pike, muskellunge, crappie and smelt. A 2025 Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission survey documented smallmouth bass, yellow perch, walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, crappie and abundant panfish in the bay.
Popular Shore Fishing Access
According to Pennsylvania DCNR, popular shore-fishing locations within Presque Isle State Park include:
- Waterworks and the Ferry Dock;
- East and West piers;
- Perry Monument;
- North Pier;
- the lagoons;
- boat-landing areas.
DCNR also lists accessible fishing piers at the Rotary Pavilion, East Pier, West Pier and North Pier. Access conditions can change, so check the park before making a long trip.

Largemouth Bass and Protected-Water Fishing
Presque Isle Bay also supports largemouth bass. Protected vegetation, shallower backwater areas and warmer habitat make the bay different from much of Lake Erie’s rocky open-water smallmouth habitat. Anglers can encounter both bass species, which is one reason Presque Isle is such a useful launch point.
Walleye, Perch and Other Species
Yellow perch and walleye move through the Erie system seasonally, while panfish and other resident species provide additional options inside the bay. Steelhead are a major Erie attraction as well, especially around tributary migrations. Match your target species to the season rather than assuming one bite stays consistent all year.
When to Fish Presque Isle Bay
- Spring: warming protected water can attract bass and other species, but Pennsylvania spring bass regulations require careful attention.
- Summer: early and late periods can produce in the bay while many smallmouth use deeper main-lake structure.
- Fall: cooling water can bring active fish and bait back toward protected areas.
- Winter: ice fishing may be possible when safe natural ice forms. Never assume ice is safe because other anglers are present.

Pennsylvania requires a valid fishing license for anglers who are required to be licensed, and a Lake Erie Permit is also required for Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and their tributaries unless an applicable exemption applies.
