The spawning season usually is the time of year most popular for catching a big trophy bass. Spawning can start as early as late November and run into June. January, February, March, April are all very popular months. With that said, the numbers of fish caught in April, May, and June are typically higher.
How is the fishing in Lake Okeechobee?
Fishing the Lake by Boat
The most popular way to fish Lake Okeechobee is by bass boat with a trolling motor. Motoring up to small stands of peppergrass and other vegetation that had grown up around brushy areas on Lake Okeechobee brings the best results. Bass feed in the grass which holds all the baitfish. Navigation at normal water levels is generally hazard-free using a trolling motor.
Fishing the Lake from Shore
Because of its size, the lake has limited shore fishing access but is surrounded by a canal inside the Herbert Hoover Dike. The canal is accessible almost all the way around the 720 square mile lake. The canal has resident bass and catfish as well as several panfish like crappie and bluegill.
How much is a fishing guide?
The going rate for Lake Okeechobee fishing guides starts at around $350 for 4 hours, $450 for 6 hours, and $550 for 8 hours for two people. With experience and high demand from tourists, most of your top guides are booked well in advance and never discount. As with all products and services, you will always find the discount guide. Fishing guides are not generally one of the things you want to purchase based on price, as quality comes with availability and experience.
An extra person costs $75-$100, and an extra hour costs $25.00.
What is the biggest bass caught in Lake Okeechobee?
The lake record for the biggest bass caught on Lake Okeechobee is 15 pounds and 5 ounces, and the world record for the largest largemouth bass caught is 22 pounds and 4 ounces.
Are there alligators in Lake Okeechobee?
Alligators are very abundant in Lake Okeechobee, although at times, it’s hard to find them based on the lake size. FWC estimates the population of alligators to be around 12,925 on Lake Jesup in Central Florida, which ranks second to the mammoth Lake Okeechobee. Okeechobee, with an estimated 28,106 alligators, has the most in any one state lake. Although Lake Okeechobee has more than twice the number of gators as Lake Jesup, it’s also 28 times larger. So, yes, there are plenty of Alligators on Lake Okeechobee!
How do people dress for fishing charter on Okeechobee?
Dressing in layers is best, especially during cooler months, but fishing is casual. A sundress for ladies with a bathing suit underneath is not uncommon. For guys, khaki shorts is as dressed up as anyone ever gets; long pants are good if you’re not used to the sun. Dress comfortably, but always try to wear light colors as they are cooler.
Remember your seasons; it makes all the difference in the world. Lake Okeechobee especially gets very cool in the winter months during the early AM. Again, wear layers for best results no matter the location from Leesburg to South Florida.
What fish live in Lake Okeechobee?
Lake Okeechobee is known for its largemouth bass, but over the years has been an excellent crappie fishery as well. The lake is home to many other species as well, including bluegill, redear sunfish, warmouth, bowfin, Florida Gar, Carp, Catfish, Chain pickerel, and more recently, the Mayan Cichlid. Most all of this continues to reproduce because of the populating of Golden Shiners and American Shad.
