Canton GA Fishing Diversity

Although there is plenty to do in the Canton surrounding, angling seems to be one of the main attractions. With plenty of bait shops offering a wide selection of fishing gear, access to a boat ramp is also provided if visitors choose to go out in their own boat.

Anglers can look forward to the great fish diversity offered to them in this part of Georgia.

Catfish

The channel and flathead catfish may be found on the rocky bedrock bank of Allatoona. Visit bait shops to purchase the right personal gear that may help you catch those 5-pound large channel catfish.

Anglers recommend using chicken liver for channels and live baits like shad or bream for flatheads.

Largemouth Bass

The largest habitats may be found in the Allatoona Creek and Little River areas of the reservoir, but they may also be found at some other improvement sites along the lake’s shoreline.

The average weight is 1.25 lbs, but there are talks that some have reached an amazing size of 5 pounds. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, or plastic worms have proven to be great baits for the largemouth, but they tend to vary depending on the season.

The bass found in Arrowhead has an average length of 12″, and the daily fishing is limited to 10.

Smallmouth Bass

A popular fish sought by anglers that may be found in the clean waters of Arrowhead is the smallmouth bass. It may be found in rocky areas and prefer the cooler temperature of the reservoir.

Experienced anglers recommend using several baits for this bass. Blade baits are great for cold waters, topwater lures for aggressive bass, spinnerbaits when the fish get active, and jerk baits for early spring. You can visit one of the many bait shops in Canton, Ga, to buy some baits.

Freshwater Drum

Not many anglers in Georgia choose to go after this fish that is abundant in Etowah. The best fishing spot from shore is the curl back close to a rock outcropping.

Anglers recommend using crayfish, live worms, or small minnows as bait for catching the freshwater drum.

Etowah River

A river name derived from the Muskogee word for town, Etowah river is 164 miles long and in the southwest flows through Canton, GA. It goes on to form Lake Allatoona and ends 571 feet above mean sea level. One of the most biodiverse rivers passes through the Chattahoochee National Forest and three state wildlife management areas.

Fishing

The Etowah River offers a diverse fish population and an enjoyable fishing experience. The river is home to around 75 fish species that may be caught at a fishing spot of your choice.

Crappie and bass fishing may be enjoyed all year round, but the best time is during spring and fall when the waters are cool. June – September is the best time for fishing for bass.

Other fish that may be found here are carp, blue and channel catfish, bluegill, sunfish, and many more.

Before choosing your fishing spot, it’s recommended to check for water release schedules for the dams because the water levels of this Georgia river tend to rise quickly. Safety first!

Etowah Fun

Etowah offers many fun sport activities. Enjoy a boat ride and explore the historic and biologically diverse sceneries that will take your breath away.

Suitable for both adults and kids, join the best family paddling experience by participating in the rodeo. You may also book a few hours for a group tour down Etowah’s water trail, considering the weather allows it.

Lake Arrowhead

Over 80 feet deep and ranked as the cleanest lake in Georgia, Lake Arrowhead is fed by pure stream water from the mountains. It is one of Georgia’s largest privately owned lakes that may be enjoyed all year round.

Fishing

With a surface area of over 430 acres, this reservoir is home to many fish species. Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, walleye, white bass, and yellow bass are just some of the fish you can catch here.

A Date With Nature

Some fishing charters in the area offer tubing, golfing, hiking, and horseback riding. Those with open minds to adventure can join in on the specifically designed rafting experience that this reservoir has to offer.

Lake Allatoona

This reservoir covering 12,000 acres, is owned by the U.S. Army Corps Engineers. The 270 mile-long shoreline offers lots of recreational spots to explore. The lake allows the use of several campgrounds and parks where you can create wonderful memories for many years to come.

Little River Marina

This Georgia lake site has boat ramps where boats may be docked or simply visit one of the eight nearby marinas. The Little River Marina has easy access making it the most popular marina on Allatoona Lake.

You and your kids may enjoy some time away from the city noise and have fun renting out pontoon boats, kayaks, jet skis, or paddleboards.

Fishing reviews

Fishing charters are a popular place where fishing enthusiasts engage in the creation of fishing strategies. All help is needed when they come eye to eye with crappie, largemouth bass, and several of the other bass species.

Being that it’s the largest public fishing area, the lake water is a great place to practice your fishing tactics regardless of your age and skill level. A well-known spot for striped and spotted bass fishing is the lower part of Etowah, below the Allatoona dam.

Fishing Record

In February 2022, Cody Hopkins from Canton broke a world record by catching a 3lb, 4.24oz white crappie fishing in Lake Allatoona. It only took him 3 tries to break a 42-year-old record.

The former record for white crappie was made by Alan Brown back in March 1980. That year the angler caught a fish that weighed 2lb, 12oz.

A Cherokee Legacy

This piece of land once belonged to the Cherokee, who lived in peace for more than a century. As all good things usually come to an end, the land was stolen from the Cherokee once gold was found in 1828.

The town was primarily named Cherokee Court House and later went through several names until the citizens decided to turn this Georgia town into a silk-producing paradise.

Canton is the former name of today’s Chinese city of Guangzhou, and that is the name that has remained to be used to this day. The silk dream failed, but Canton citizens didn’t just sit around doing nothing. In the late 1800s, Canton became one of the top cotton producers.

Today, Canton is known for its welcoming community and numerous natural resources surrounding it. It is the top choice of seniors who love the slow pace of life and choose this small town as their retirement place.
