From Canada to Sunny South Florida!

From Canada to Sunny South Florida!

While it is the frosen tundra back home in Canada, everyone received there fear share of the South Florida Sun today!

Trevor Matthews a successful film producer from Canada always takes time to visit South Florida during the holidays with family and freinds. As part of there yearly adventure we get to entertain them on the water and at the same time let them work on there tans.
Trevor this year brought additional freinds with him, one from as far away as California. While there was none that could touch the distance of travel that it took his brother which came from England where he runs the families 5 star resort that is hosting the rider cup in 2010.
As you can see by the picture above, there was fun and laughter all day. A total of 7 people, they took out 3 of our finest boats for an adventure in the Everglades for the Florida largemouth bass. As ussal the Everglades did not disapoint anyone, while the over all size of the bass were down in size the numbers were not.
The three boats catching a total of 106 largemouth bass in just 4 short hours and we ended the trip with an exciting alligator feeding that was fantastic to say the least.
While there only here for a few more days, New Years in South Florida would not be the same with out them!

Fishing in the Urban City

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

ellen3.jpgLake Osborne

Today I fished with the Cushing’s from Gig Harbaur, WA. We fished canal systems and lakes in Lake worth, Florida area. We decided to fish live bait and artificial lures and what a nice combination it was. We captured some nice largemouth bass as well as peacock bass all in a super-half day trip.

Today conditions were sunny, although a little windy. It’s always a good decision fishing in the urban city fisheries, there’s is a lot of good spots to fish when its windy. I sure did enjoy fishing with the Cushing’s and they are wanting to come back in the spring to fish Okeechobee with me.

Good fishing,

Day two with Phillip…once again!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

chevron-and-phillep-004.jpg

We went to a new location today for Phillip, but an old one for me. This is one of the great things about South Florida., there’s lots of water and fisheries everywhere. This was one of the coldest days we have had this year, we started the day throwing top water baits. The key to the bite was working the lure very slow, due to the cold front you would think the fish would have not hit top water…well they did!

The first fish we caught was 4 pounds, so I told Phillip to change his bait to what I was throwing. It worked out pretty well, he caught a very chunky 2 pound largemouth right away. As the day moved on, we moved around a lot and had action all day. We caught over 50 fish,  40 of them where peacock bass and the other 10 were a mix of largemouth bass and snakeheads.

Fishing Okeechobee and Everglades in Florida

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Fishing in the Everglades of South FloridaEverglades Freshwater Fishing

Hello everybody its been awhile, I have been on the road a lot and it sure is good to fish at home. The lake “Okeechobee” that is, is looking great and I am going out on the limb by saying this could be one of the best winters in the last 10 years.

There is more cover(vegetation) to fish than I have ever remember. The cover is a little different than the past years, there is going to be a lot of adventures this year as we try to follow and locate these big bass…the up side is we should have plenty of water to ourselves.

Just getting back from New York fishing Lake Champlain on the FLW tour, a beautiful lake good fishing but it’s nice to see Florida largemouth again, there giants here compared to Champlain. Today, I fished with Harry Swauger and his father both are very good fishermen with baitcasters and/or spinning reels, today they were on top of there game. We fished the glades and caught good size fish most of the day. The biggest fish of the day was 9lb largemouth, it sure is good to see how healthy Florida bass are.

Well, I hate to run, but I have to go to Clarks Hill for the last FLW series tournament of the year. I will be back in about two weeks, I hope to bring some of the cooler weather with me. If we get some cool weather while I am gone that will be the thing to fire these fish up!

Until then good fishing…If you are visiting South or Central Florida for work or vacation and want to experience the best fishing that there is to offer then please give me a call. We can be reached @ (888) 629-BASS or email me below.

Muck used to help recovery of Lake Okeechobee

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

A mere rainstorm isn’t enough to discourage FWC fisheries biologist Don Fox from working in Lake Okeechobee to ensure the lake’s good health. Fox was excited to find this clump of coontail growing on its own in the lake. Coontail is important to nurturing the bottom of the food chain that makes the lake a world-class fishery.

— It used to be nasty, worthless muck inhibiting plants and wildlife at the bottom of the lake; now, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, that same muck is supporting turkeys, turtles, several types of mammals and even a covey of quail.

Don Fox, a commission biologist, said muck dredged from the bottom of Lake Okeechobee to help re-establish the plant life that nurtures the lake’s world-class fishery has been used to build islands, and a variety of plants thriving on the dried-out muck provide food and cover for the animals.

Lawson Snyder, the commission’s deputy director of habitat and species conservation, said the dredging began in 2001 when drought lowered the lake level, was postponed when hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 filled the lake and restarted this summer when the lake was at a record low.

“I won’t say a drought is ever a good thing,” Snyder said, “but it did give us the opportunity to get in and get this work done.”

Since then, Tropical Storm Fay has raised the lake to about 15 feet; but Snyder said the man-made islands in the marshy northwest still rise above the water.

“Even at 16 feet, you can pull up to the islands,” he said.

Snyder said the islands do not contain any of the arsenic-contaminated muck that was scraped from southern Lake Okeechobee and hauled away.

“All of the muck is tested before it’s used,” he said, “and everything in the area of the lake where the islands were made had either no contaminates or levels that were low enough to be acceptable for use.”

Peacock Bass Fishing with the Goldstein Family

Peacock bass florida Florida peacock bassPeacock bass fishing in Miami

Today I had the pleasure of taking out David Goldstein of Parkland, FL. David was scheduled to go possibly large-mouth fishing, but do to all the high water from the tropical storm I suggested that we go fishing for the mighty peacock bass.

They were really wanting to trying something new, so we went to the urban canals of Miami where I knew the resent rain water wouldn’t effect us nearly as much. It turned out to be a awesome decision and day of fishing, they boated 20+ peacock bass in just 4 hours. David and his son where great guys and fun customers to be with.

David and his family are local South Florida residents, so I look forward to fishing with them in the near future.

Great job guys see ya soon.

Rinaldi Family slam the Florida Peacock Bass!

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

the-rinaldi-family-001.jpg

The Rinaldi family have been repeat customers of mine for a long time. Today I had the pleasure of taking them for Peacock bass in Homestead, Florida. With the recent tropical storm Fay I didn’t think the fishing was going to be “red hot,” boy was I ever wrong. I believe Frankie won for the most, Tony had the biggest peacock and Anthony was doing good trying to keep up. By the end of day we lost track of how many peacocks we caught but our thumbs showed the signs of a great day of peacock bass fishing.

Can’t wait to see what the second day will bring at a new private lake we are going to fish!

Florida Freshwater Summer Slam - Largemouth Bass & Peacock Bass

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

8-15-08-004.jpg8-15-08-006.jpg 8-15-08-003.jpg 8-15-08-001.jpg

I took out long time repeat customer Philip Danial his son-in-law Tyson and Tyson’s friend Rick all from Huntsville, TN. Day1, we ventured way out in the glades looking for some trophy large-mouth bass. With all the recent rain we have had in the Everglades, it is much higher than normal. I expected a semi-slow bite and to my surprise the bite was much better than expected. The guys boated 19 large-mouth from 3lbs to 7 1/2lbs. What a great day it turned out to be, all the fish looked like footballs, fat and healthy.

Day 2 & 3 we were in Miami for the hard fighting peacock bass. The competition was on, they boated fish after fish for two straight days. For the two days in Miami they boated close to 70 peacock bass. What a amazing three days with these guys, a true summer freshwater slam.

I always look forward to fishing with these guys and I had a blast watching these guys go at it!

Peacock Bass Fishing in South Florida

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Florida Peacock bassToday once again, I had out Paul Bednarz and his son PJ from Georgia. This makes Paul’s 6th trip with us so far. They did not mind that it was real hot today, because they were pretty busy catching fish and there was a very nice breeze. These two are always a blast and so funny to be with, especially when there catching fish…haha.

A side note on todays trip, a lot of guide(s) are running around crazy simply because they can’t figure out the pattern, which is generally because they are just not experienced enough to know any different. You can always tell the professional guide because they obey the laws (like no wake zones), don’t get caught up in that situation trying to save a few dollars. It’s just never worth your time or money in the end. The fishing is not real easy this time of the year, it takes a experienced guide to find these fish day to day!

Our trip finished very well today, we got to laugh at the “want-a-be” guide as he ran all round looking foSnook & Peacock bassr peacock bass. While we boated 30 plus fish, with several in the 4 and 5 pound range with even 3 snook added for icing on the cake.

Don’t be fulled by a imposer, dressed like a fishing guide.

Everglades Fishing with the Boys from Texas

Monday, July 14th, 2008

fishing-in-the-glades-boys-from-texas-003.jpg

For the last two days we were very fortunate to be fishing with Michael Shore and his group of friend from the Dallas, TX area once again. The two days were a whirl wind of laughs and stories to say the least, especially for those guys.

They flew in Friday afternoon to Ft Lauderdale airport, then headed over to the Hard-Rock Casino and Resort in town where we would pick them up at 6am the next morning. This group of fishermen are probably the most versatile group we get to spend time with, they adapt well and just have a lot of fun. This years trip had several highlights, but none more then the “ball gazing games”…and of coarse the big fish that were caught.

On Saturday we headed to a spot known for big fish, but not often fished due to the long dirt road travel to access the fishery. As expected we fished three boats all day long with not a sign of another. The fishing was tougher then I would have like to seen it with the resent rains. It did not help matters that we were dealing with bite blue bird skies also. The one hope I had for the location, was that it would be consistent as in the past and give up a big trophy bass.

Today was no different then most summer fishing days you just had to find the fish, then sloooooow down and fish. That’s what our boat did after a slow period in the morning we got right in the grove. We did miss a lot of fish at first, then we figured out the fish were biting very softly. Around 11am our boat hooked into a monster bass which was pulled drag like crazy and then jumped over the net twice. In the end we landed her and WON the big fish battle. She weighted just around 9lbs, this fish had a 10lb head with a 8lb body and was a very long fish. In the last 10 minutes of fishing Michael hooked into another quality fish, maybe 5 or 6 pounds. It all happen really quick, the fish just jumped and gave him that largemouth bass wave as she came out of the water. I think she simply was giving him a “ball gaze” either way she got off to be caught on another day.

On day two we headed the complete opposite direction, wanting to provide a new experience and at the same time put these guys on more fish. After about a 1 hour ride we arrived with a sprinkle of rain already on us, I was worried knowing the forecast called for 60 present chance of rain. But, as the fish gods quite often do for us they let it rain everywhere but on us today. With the overcast sky’s we started with topwater and as the day goes without staying, we stayed with it all day.

Today worked out pretty good, as the picture shows above everyone caught fish with a couple over 5 lbs and one or two that just took my breath a way when they hit the lure.

All in all, a GREAT bunch of guys to fish with. I really want to thank Michael and his friends for spending a couple of days with us.

I think we had as much fun as I hope all of you did. Till next time, tight lines!
