By JOHN KLEIN Senior Sports Columnist Editor’s note:
John Klein, Tulsa World senior sports columnist, inherited his wanderlust from his grandfather John Steichen, who traveled the world after he retired from farming in the 1960s. Klein flew on the Concorde from London to New York, did a transatlantic crossing on the Queen Elizabeth II from New York to London and rode the Orient Express from Paris to Venice before he was 30 years old. In recent years, his wife Lisa has joined him as he traded in his black tie for binoculars and wild nights for wildlife.
“The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” —Klein listed Florida Everglades see what wrote below:
Everglades (Florida)
Sooner trips to the Orange Bowl over the years have made the Everglades an easy destination for traveling Oklahomans.
The drive down to the visitor’s center is a little farther than it looks on the map, but do it. It isn’t easy to drag yourself away from South Beach or Joe’s Stone Crab. But again, do it. The Everglades is one of the most unique places of nature in the country.
The visitor’s center, and the wooden walkways around it, are very interesting. However, to really see the Everglades, you’ll need to get out in it. Get one of the tours that will take you out in boats into the park. Bring your insect repellent and maybe a hand-held fan. The heat and humidity here isn’t just high, it’s oppressive.
The Everglades has so much wildlife it can be nearly overwhelming.
You’ll never see so many birds and all types of animals in one place.
Stay: The Fountainebleau is the quintessential Miami Beach hotel.
Eat: Joe’s Stone Crab, in Miami Beach, will have a long wait that is worth it.

Matthew Becks was wondering around Bass Pro Shop with his wife on their customer appreciation rewards night when his wife hit the jack pot by winning the free guided fishing trip that was given away. Yes, Mathew’s wife Colleen Beck won the freshwater bass fishing trip given by Bass Pro for Customers Appreciation rewards night.
Coleen the loving wife she is, gave the trip to her husband and favorite Uncle George. So, Mathew and Uncle George became the lucky Anglers that are going fishing on Lake Toho known for producing trophy bass.
Finally the day arrives and the fish did what they do EAT, 26 largemouth bass with a big fish of 4 pounds graced the line which made it a day to remenber. The only thing that would have improved the day would have been to have landed the other 15 plus we missed in the grass or maybe a 10 pounder.
Well that’s why they call it fishing…and not catching.
Thanks Matthew, George and especially Colleen!
Till next time tight lines and good fishing….

I was fortunate to be able to fish with Captain John Leech this past Monday. My niece and her husband won a trip while in Orlando visiting Bass Pro Shops during the preferred rewards customer appreciation night. They both knew how much I love to fish, so they invited me to go on the guided fishing trip. I drove up from Port Charlotte where I love to fish Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf, and met my nephew. Captain John was at our meeting place when we both arrived. To be honest I haven’t fish for bass since the mid 80’s in Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron, so I was very excited about this opportunity.
Captain John was a great guide, he taught us how to use plastic lures, put us on fish, was very friendly and an all around nice guy. What a day we had, great weather, fishing and good company, I couldn’t ask for more. I would love to fish with John again and would recommend him to anyone looking for a super fishing experience.
I would like to thank Bass Pro Shops for this trip and of course my niece for asking…
George Bednorek, Port Charlotte, Fl.
