Fishing Lake Panasoffkee, Florida

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Today my good friend and fishing partner Don and I, fished Lake “P”, the canal and a short stretch of the river downstream from the canal. We started out on the lower canal and worked out onto and down river. We threw soft plastics as well as a couple of crank baits. The water was fairly clear, and with the lack of rainfall recently, there was almost no current. Water temps were in the high 60′s in this area. We saw very little surface action in this area and marked very few fish once we left the canal. We fished several back slews and main edges and had very little success. We saw no evidence of spawning or pre spawn in these areas.

Around 1:30 we motored up to the lake, which was laid down like a mirror by the way, and went over to the east side of the lake. We motored up the east side, fished and scouted a few coves. The water temps here were almost in the 70 degree range and we started to see some fanning evidence in the shallows, although we didn’t see any active beds yet, but they were definitely “testing” the bottom in these areas.

We then motored up to the northeast end of the lake and tried to go up the little cut that joins up with Little Jones Creek. Here we seen definite signs of bedding but no active beds yet.  Sadly after going up the cut for about ½ a mile the path was blocked by a downed tree, so we had to come back out.

We then motored up to Big Jones and in the back bay, before the creek narrows, we found a few bass chasing Threadfin Shad. The area was littered with big gators so we didn’t linger and disturb the big guys, and it was time to head for the ramp.

While the fishing wasn’t that great today, the weather and the lake were absolutely beautiful.  We were mainly on a scouting mission to find spawning areas and we did find quite a few. So hopefully in a couple of weeks we will be “tearing em up.”

This post is a little wordy, but I had a lot to cover today. I’ll try to keep it more to the point from here on in. I appreciate good feedback, and if you want a fishing report from one of these areas, or just some general information on this great sport, I’ll be glad to help you. So please drop me a line. Good Fishin Mates.

Till next time, tight lines….

Everglades Bass Fishing 1-8-09

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Thursday I took out Jim Root and two of his buddies. We went out into the everglades for some largemouth bass action, and that’s what we got a lot of. The action right is on from the first cast to your last.

Sorry to say, you know the old story, ”the big one got away.” But this time it did, what a great day of fishing. All together the guys boated between 30 to 40 fish in just a half day trip (4 hours) of fishing.

If you have a child or a wife that you would love to get “hooked” on fishing, this is the time to take them. The action good, morning or afternoon. We guide 7 days a week, so let’s go fishin!

Two Days Everglades Fishing with Scott

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Today we started our long bumpy journey out in to the Everglades again. When we got to our location and made the long run out in the boat, it was a bit chilly at least for us Florida boys!

It was colder fishing today with the cold front that came in over night. I had thought the fishing would slow down quite a bit, but I was wrong. It was still good because the water temp only lower a small amount overnite. We started the day with topwater frogs, but then slowed down to throwing JDC baits wacky style and catching a fair amount of fish up to five pounds.

Looking forward to seeing Scott again!

South Florida Peacock Bass Fishing

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Today I took out Allen Mills and his buddy Lorne Bly from Canada. We went down to Miami for some hard fighting peacock bass action. This time of the year the bite can be unpredictable because of the cold fronts and water temp changing often.

Today the bite started out a little slow, but they wound up catching 18 fish for the day. It ended up a good day of fishing as it usually does in South Florida this time of the year.

Looking forward to fishing with these again!

Everglades Fishing Going Good…

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Today I had the pleasure of taking Scott Saunberson from Canada. I picked Scott up early in the morning from his hotel and we talked about the fishing conditions, what type of fishing he likes and how much does he get to do it. Since he lives in Canada he only has a short time in South Florida, so he’s fishing two days with us. Because of the season changes up north, he interested in the season down here. So on the way out to the Everglades I was able to explain to him what’s going on with the water and what the bass are doing this time of the year. Basically, I asked him, “do you want numbers of fish or do you want to go after big fish?”

We decided to go where the numbers were and since I have him for two days we would go after bigger bass tomorrow. We ended up having a great day, we caught over 30 largemouth bass up to three pounds.

Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
