Merritt's Mill Pond
Merritt’s Mill Pond is centrally
located in Jackson County. The dam, adjacent to
U.S. Highway 90, is 2.5 miles east of downtown
Marianna. A Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission public boat ramp
provides full launching. It is reached from the
intersection of U.S. 90 and SR 71, by traveling
north on SR 71 for 1.1 miles, then east on SR
164 for 1.8 miles, then south on Hunter Fish
Camp Road for 0.6 miles. Launching access is
also available for a daily fee in a campground
off U.S. 90 adjacent to the dam. Bait, tackle,
supplies, and fishing licenses are available at
bait and tackle shops and sporting good stores
in Marianna.
Merritt’s Mill Pond the dominant sport fish
include largemouth bass, redear sunfish,
bluegill, and spotted sunfish.
REDEAR SUNFISH, BLUEGILL AND SPOTTED SUNFISH –
Crickets, earthworms, wigglers and catalpa worms
are generally the best natural baits. Trolling
small spinner baits is an effective technique
for panfish.
LARGEMOUTH BASS – Shiners are the best natural
bait. Blue or black plastic worms rigged
Texas-style or yellow-skirted flutter baits are
the best artificial. Floater/diver type minnow
baits fished early or late in the day are also
effective.
